Whether we like it or not, these days, most people are on camera in some way, shape or form. And for many, it is in the form of a virtual call, meeting, or webinar. If you haven’t thought about your virtual presence, I will give you my top 4 reasons why you should, and why it can make a difference.
1: Paying Attention To Detail Shows That You Care
It says to people that you are detail-oriented on the job. People want to know that you care about the details as much as they do! This can go a long way with a potential client, a potential employer, and more. We are in such a fast-paced, short attention span world and when people care about the details, It makes them stand out from the rest.
2: It Creates Fewer Distractions
It is easy to get distracted while on a virtual call, so your best bet is to limit the number of distractions on your end. Blurred backgrounds always leave us wondering what is behind there. What are you hiding that you choose to blur? Is it clutter? Are you in a location that you don’t want known? It makes the imagination go wild! So, the more you can have the person on the other end focused on you and your words, the better you will be.
3: It Shows Professionalism
While most other people have those blurred backgrounds because they are easy, you are taking the care and time to create a professional space. That sets you apart big time. In my experience, about 80% of people that I have been on virtual calls with blur their backgrounds. The people who have taken the time to create a nice space catch my eye in a great way. By the way, your virtual space does not have to be expensive or fancy, it can be quite simple! A corner of a room is enough to add a few things on the wall, a nice and simple bookshelf, a plant or something else that pops.
4: It Lets Your Personality Come Through!
This can act as an icebreaker in some situations. I have a little statue of a dog on the bookshelf behind my computer, and I can’t tell you how many people ask about it! It gets us loose, allows some fun and an opportunity for connection if they also have a dog. Then we get to business. A slight touch of your personality in your background is a good thing. But keep in mind that I used the word slight!
